USS COWPENS (CG 63) is a TICONDEROGA class AEGIS guided missile cruiser. The AEGIS Weapon System is by far the most powerful weapon system in the world today. COWPENS was built in Bath Iron Works in Maine. Originally homeported at the 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego as part of the KITTY HAWK (CV 63) battle group, she later went with KITTY HAWK to the 7th Fleet, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, where she still serves today. COWPENS' commissioning date caused her to miss action in the first Gulf War. However, since then she has been up front and active in the Persian Gulf, including the distinction of having fired the very first missiles of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. COWPENS' nickname, "The Mighty Moo"

This web site is provided as a communications outlet to past and present members and family of the AEGIS Guided Missile Cruiser, USS COWPENS (CG 63) and the World War II Light Aircraft Carrier, USS COWPENS (CVL 25). It is also a source of history and information to the general public about two great ships of the U.S. Navy and the men and women that served on them.
Two Great Ships
USS COWPENS (CVL 25) was an INDEPENDENCE class light aircraft carrier that served with distinction in the Pacific Theater during World War II. COWPENS was built in the Camden shipyard near Philadelhia, PA. Her keel was laid as the cruiser HUNTINGTON, but the Navy's need for carriers caused her transformation into a carrier. CVL 25 earned 12 battle stars, more than any other carrier in the fleet. She was also the first American carrier to enter Tokyo Bay, and men from her Fighting Squadron 50 were the first Americans to set foot on the Japanese mainland. When the Japanese surrendered on the deck of the USS MISSOURI, COWPENS (the Mighty Moo) was anchored right alongside the MISSOURI (the Mighty Mo).
COWPENS coined the "The Mighty Moo" nickname during CVL 25's service in World War II. To honor CVL 25 and her crew, CG 63 adopted "The Mighty Moo" nickname, and CG 63 crewmembers are known as "The Thundering Herd".

The USS CABOT CVL 28 is the last surviving WWII small aircraft carrier and is still in her WWII configuration.
I'm looking for good pictures of CVL 25 or CG 63 for a photo gallery. Scan in your pics and email them my way. I especially need pictures of CVL 25 and her crew.
